The Group leader is Councillor Hilary Jones Hilary.Jones@derby.gov.uk and the deputy leader is Councillor Lucy Care. Following Lib Dem gains in the local elections in 2006, the council is now in no overall control. The Labour and Conservative groups, who both lost seats, formed a joint cabinet of 7 Labour and 3 Conservative councillors. They also excluded Liberal Democrats from all positions of responsibility, changing the council's constitution to deny Liberal Democrats positions as chair or vice chair of Overview and Scrutiny Commissions and other committees. The chair of the local party executive committee, which covers Derby North, Derby South and South Derbyshire constituencies, is David Batey drbatey@aol.com . The party has a number of branches covering more local areas. There is more information on activities in Derby on their website at www.derbycitylibdems.org.uk, and the local party shares the regional office at Unit 1, 24 Great Northern Court, Great Northern Road, Derby, DE1 1LR. Amber ValleyFollowing recent boundary changes, this pleasant mid-Derbyshire Constituency has got slightly smaller, but it still includes the main Market Towns of Heanor, Ripley and Alfreton, plus a number of surrounding villages. We have Councillors on Town and Parish Councils in Heanor (Gavin Sarkas-Bosman and Judith Woolley) and South Wingfield (Paul Gibbons), plus Aldercar & Langley Mill (Judith Woolley, busy or what ?). Our 2001 and 2005 PPC, Kate Smith, is also a Cllr in Crich, which has technically moved to Derbyshire Dales E143. Our youngest member, Oliver Smith, hit the headlines in early 2006 when he was elected LP President. At the latest AGM he agreed to continue and is doing so in 2007 (on condition he doesn't get loads of Media interest). He is currently 14. Current campaigns include Amber Valley Borough Council's leisure centre development plans, the threats to a local maternity unit and, separately, a local minor injuries unit, and improvements to the consultation over the Amber Valley Partnership market towns development plan.
